We understand the school as an extension of the publilc space of the city. The school as an agora, square and street, a luminous garden like that of Epicurus, where you can learn to be a citizen.
The school is built around an open patio, creating a square, where waiting and access take place and where the building recovers the friendly scale of the historic city. We imagine the square inhabited by a small group of birch trees that will bring freshness in the warms seasons and will serve to attenuate the sound impact produced by the use. The square is connected to the city through a large staircase that is intended to be a place to stay, an amphitheater. The classrooms are above the square, and under it the larger scale spaces, the auditorium, the library and the gymnasiums.
The classrooms are terraced in the north-south direction, favoring the sunshine in the square. The terraces are configured as green roofs on which a light pergola will allow the growth of climbing plants, helping to cool down and reduce noise.
Towards the city, the school wouldn’t want to have facades, nor gestures or grimaces because it is part of it, a place of meeting, of discovery. At street level, the school is dematerialised, allowing an east-west cross view that reveals the complexity of the section and at a glance it shows the functioning of the school’s mechanism: the square-agora full of students as well as the staircase of access, the gymnasiums in use, the library and the readers and the activities of the multi-purpose room. The school is shown as a “social condenser”, as an educational community living, coexisting, in a time and in a place.
The school is also a climate control mechanism. This school wants to be a simply a space, air-conditioned or thermotope that is signified, that is meaningful in th landscape in where it is inserted, in the drama of the actors who inhabit it and in the legibility of its own thermoregulation systems, of its instructions of use.
The program is developed in a north-south sequence, street-amphitheater staircase, patio-agora, the acces, above it the classrooms and below them the common areas. At the entrance, deep looks are possible that cross the center both transversally and vertically, promoting both the understanding of the building and the feeling of belonging to the school community. The position of the gymnasium and the common areas of each kluster is in a ring, favoring the casual encounter, the crossed glance between users, thus promoting socialization.
The building must be understood as a city, an interweaving of the themes “street”, “square” and “passage”, with multiple and complex readings, routes in which each user can read individually their wishes.
The school is built with a base of walls and concrete slabs with deep beams that save the gymnasium, and above it a structure of laminated wood beams and pillars that support the cross-laminated timber slabs and walls. The envelope is solved with a ventilated wooden facade and a lattice, as a solar, acoustic and visual protection.
